US Senator says what happened in Iran could happen in Russia
On Monday, Trump announced plans to impose economic sanctions on Russia and any countries purchasing Russian goods unless the Ukraine conflict is resolved within 50 days. Graham, who co-sponsored bipartisan legislation supporting such sanctions, backed the deadline by citing last month’s US military action against Iran.
“If [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and others are wondering what happens on day 51, I would suggest they call the Ayatollah,” Graham wrote on X. “If I were a country buying cheap Russian oil, propping up Putin’s war machine, I would take President Trump at his word,” he added.
Russian officials have repeatedly stated that external pressures will not deter Moscow from pursuing its goals in Ukraine. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized Western governments for harming their own economies by pushing for additional sanctions.
In June, Israel conducted airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, describing the operation as a preemptive move to prevent Tehran’s nuclear weapon development. After retaliatory Iranian attacks, Israeli officials threatened to target Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
