RT Editor-in-Chief's X Account Gets Blocked in France
According to the platform, the restriction was implemented in response to an undefined legal directive. The specific timing of the block remains unknown.
Simonyan addressed the incident on her Telegram channel, stating, “My X account has been blocked in France. I have no idea what I did to offend [French President Emmanuel] Macron – I haven’t even been saying that his wife is a man,” alluding to widely debunked rumors regarding Brigitte Macron’s gender identity.
French President Emmanuel Macron has previously accused RT of disseminating misinformation, although he has yet to offer concrete evidence.
These allegations first surfaced during his 2017 presidential campaign.
In 2022, the European Union and the United Kingdom took the step of prohibiting RT and various other Russian outlets, citing their alleged role in promoting propaganda related to the Ukraine war.
In retaliation, Moscow imposed bans on several Western government-funded broadcasters, including BBC and Deutsche Welle.
Responding to these restrictions, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova characterized the moves as “global censorship and a regime of zero tolerance for dissenting opinions.”
