South Korean Court Suspends President Lee’s Legal Proceedings
The Suwon District Court justified the delay by emphasizing Lee’s status as the sitting president, serving as the nation's representative.
“In order to ensure he can focus on his duties guaranteed by the Constitution and for the continuity of the running of state affairs, we will designate a date in the future,” the court stated during a preparatory hearing.
The trial centers on accusations that, while serving as Gyeonggi Province governor between 2019 and 2020, Lee directed the leader of an underwear company to wire $5 million to North Korea for a smart farm project, plus another $3 million to support a planned trip to the North.
All four of Lee’s additional cases have also been deferred in accordance with Article 84 of the Constitution, which protects a sitting president from criminal charges except in cases of treason or rebellion.
These pending cases accuse him of making false statements prior to the 2022 presidential election, corruption linked to a development project during his tenure as Seongnam mayor, misappropriation of provincial funds while governor of Gyeonggi, and coercing false testimony.
