Greece Unveils "Cruise Fee" to Boost Tourism Revenue
(MENAFN) Greece has officially implemented a new charge aimed at enhancing its tourism income, introducing a fee for cruise ships that dock at its ports.
This policy, effective from Monday, applies to each individual disembarking from a cruise ship as part of a sightseeing excursion on a commercial leisure vessel.
As reported by a news agency, the newly established "Cruise Fee" will vary depending on the time of year and the destination port.
This tiered pricing approach reflects both seasonal demand and the popularity of certain locations.
Specifically, travelers visiting the well-known islands of Mykonos and Santorini during the peak tourist period—from June 1 to September 30—will be required to pay €20 (approximately $23.3).
Meanwhile, passengers arriving at any other port throughout Greece in that same timeframe will incur a reduced charge of €5.
According to the news agency, the obligation for gathering and remitting this fee falls to the shipping agents and cruise operators.
These entities must carry out the process electronically, under a system established by the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy.
