Trump Moves to Expand Federal Oversight of D.C. Police
“We're going to need a crime bill that we're going to be putting in, and it's going to pertain initially to D.C.,” Trump stated to reporters after an event at the Kennedy Center. “We're going to be asking for extensions on that, long-term extensions, because you can't have 30 days.”
Earlier this week, on Monday, Trump issued an executive order declaring a crime emergency in Washington, D.C. The declaration was made to “protect public servants, citizens, and tourists, and ensure the safe functioning of the federal government,” according to a statement from the White House.
The emergency declaration, which is set to last for 30 days, requires Congressional approval for any potential extension.
In a sharp criticism of D.C.'s ongoing push for statehood, Trump added: “Statehood is ridiculous. We want to straighten the place out.”
Meanwhile, National Guard troops began deploying to the city Tuesday night. According to a senior army official, 800 members are expected to be fully operational by the end of the week.
