Paris Saint-Germain Wins UEFA Super Cup
(MENAFN) In a dramatic showdown in Udine, Italy, Paris Saint-Germain overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Tottenham Hotspur on penalties and claim their first-ever UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.
The match featured a thrilling late resurgence from the Champions League victors, who secured victory after a nail-biting shootout.
The Europa League champions, Spurs, appeared firmly in control, holding a 2-0 advantage with just five minutes left in regular time.
Their lead was established through early strikes by Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.
Van de Ven opened the scoring in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a rebound after Lucas Chevalier blocked Joao Palhinha’s shot.
Romero extended the lead shortly after the interval with a header from a set-piece in the 48th minute.
PSG thought they had narrowed the gap in the 67th minute when Bradley Barcola found the net from close range.
However, the celebration was cut short as the goal was disallowed for offside following a VAR assessment.
Undeterred, the Champions League holders launched a dramatic late rally. Substitute Lee Kang-in struck decisively in the 85th minute with a forceful finish, and Goncalo Ramos leveled the score in stoppage time with a crucial goal in the fourth added minute.
In the ensuing penalty shootout, PSG stumbled initially as Vitinha missed their first kick.
Nevertheless, Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, Lee Kang-in, and Nuno Mendes all converted their spot-kicks. For Spurs, Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro found the target, but Van de Ven’s effort was denied, and Mathys Tel sent his attempt off-target.
With this triumph, Paris Saint-Germain became the 26th club to capture the UEFA Super Cup title and the first French team to do so.
Real Madrid remains the competition’s most decorated side, with six trophies, having defeated Atalanta 2-0 in 2024. AC Milan and Barcelona follow closely with five titles each.
