Sudan Urges Colombia to Cease Mercenary Involvement
(MENAFN) Sudanese Prime Minister Kamil Idris has appealed to Colombia to halt the recruitment and deployment of mercenaries to Sudan, a country embroiled in a prolonged internal conflict.
The war, which has lasted over two years, pits the national military against paramilitary groups, causing widespread devastation across the region.
The appeal was made public through a letter released by a state-run news agency on Saturday.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro later confirmed the contents of the correspondence. Idris wrote, “In the spirit of creativity, solidarity, and commitment to peace, this call comes to stand firmly with us to end the siege of the city of El Fasher and stop the recruitment and deployment of mercenaries to our lands.”
This statement comes amid ongoing accusations by Sudan’s transitional administration, which claims that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is backing foreign fighters — including Colombians — aligned with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group involved in the conflict.
Sudanese officials assert they have “irrefutable” proof, already presented to the UN Security Council, of the UAE’s involvement in funding and arming these mercenaries.
The government warns that such actions endanger both regional and continental stability.
In response to the alleged interference, Khartoum cut diplomatic relations with Abu Dhabi in May, accusing the Gulf nation of breaching Sudanese sovereignty.
The UAE has rejected these accusations, calling them “baseless allegations” and “feeble media stunts.”
