Moscow makes fresh prisoner exchange with Ukraine

(MENAFN) Russia has handed over the remains of an additional 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers to Kiev, according to reports. In return, Moscow received the bodies of 19 of its own soldiers from Ukraine.

The exchange comes after a recent summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, and subsequent meetings in Washington between Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders, where a potential resolution to the conflict was discussed.

Ukraine’s Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed that it had received the 1,000 servicemen’s remains from Russia.

Earlier, during the second round of Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul in early June, Moscow had pledged to repatriate over 6,000 Ukrainian soldiers’ remains as a humanitarian gesture. These were gradually transferred to Ukraine in stages over the following weeks, while Russia received the remains of 79 fallen soldiers in return. Putin later stated that Russia was prepared to return another 3,000 bodies to Kiev.
