Trump Casts Doubts on South Korea’s Stability

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump publicly questioned South Korea’s political stability on Monday, days before his highly anticipated White House meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung.

“WHAT IS GOING ON IN SOUTH KOREA? Seems like a Purge or Revolution,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “We can't have that and do business there.”

In response, South Korea’s presidential office confirmed it is checking the situation following Trump’s remarks, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Political Crisis Unfolds
Trump’s comments come amid a deep political crisis in South Korea triggered by the impeachment and removal of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Yoon’s declaration of martial law in December 2024 sparked widespread public outrage and political chaos.

On April 4, the Constitutional Court unanimously upheld Yoon’s impeachment, officially ending his presidency. The country then endured a period of instability marked by several acting presidents amid intense political infighting.

A snap presidential election on June 3 brought Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party to power. This upcoming summit marks Lee’s first face-to-face encounter with Trump, just 82 days after assuming office.

Key Topics for the Bilateral Summit
The White House confirmed that the bilateral meeting and lunch will cover a broad range of strategic issues. President Lee signaled he would address Washington’s push for strategic flexibility concerning the 28,500 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea, describing it as “difficult to agree on” but a necessary topic for discussion.

North Korea will take center stage during the talks. Lee plans to present his ambitious three-stage denuclearization strategy aimed at persuading Pyongyang to freeze, reduce, and eventually dismantle its nuclear arsenal.

Additional agenda items include defense cost-sharing, security arrangements, and ongoing tariff negotiations.

As tensions rise, both leaders face urgent pressure to stabilize the alliance and navigate the evolving geopolitical landscape on the Korean Peninsula.
