Mexican leader expresses willingness to make security deal with US
(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Monday her government is open to a new security agreement with the United States to combat drug cartels and irregular migration, but stressed it must be built on “mutual respect” and “without subordination.”
In her first State of the Union address, Sheinbaum rejected reports that US President Donald Trump had secretly asked the Pentagon to examine potential military strikes on Mexican soil, calling instead for cooperation based on “shared responsibility, sovereignty and trust.”
Sheinbaum said Mexico and Washington are close to finalizing a new security framework, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio due in Mexico later this week. Her remarks come as Trump threatens fresh tariffs to pressure Mexico on migration and organized crime.
Last month, Mexico extradited 26 suspected traffickers to the US, including members of the Sinaloa Cartel. But Sheinbaum faces the challenge of resisting US pressure while countering Trump’s deeply unpopular stance in Mexico.
