6.0-Magnitude Quake Jolts Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland Region

(MENAFN) A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea's New Ireland region on Tuesday afternoon, the German Research Center for Geosciences confirmed. The tremor, which occurred at 1659 GMT, was centered at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), making it more likely to cause noticeable shaking and potential disruption in the surrounding area.

Despite the strength of the quake, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or damage to infrastructure. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assessing any potential effects, but initial reports indicate minimal impact in terms of destruction or injuries.

This earthquake is the latest in a series of seismic events to affect the Pacific region, an area well-known for its tectonic activity due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire. As of now, no tsunami alerts have been issued, and the authorities continue to keep residents informed.
