Kremlin comments on Trump’s claim of nations dropping out of BRICS
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Wednesday that BRICS unites nations pursuing shared goals of development, stability, and mutual prosperity. Responding to Trump’s remarks, he said the group’s purpose is not to act “against any third country or any third-country currency.” Peskov added that BRICS operates according to the principles of “partnership, prosperity, and predictability,” which are clearly reflected in its summit declarations.
Speaking a day earlier, Trump accused the bloc of mounting an “attack on the dollar” and warned that Washington would impose tariffs on nations that align with BRICS policies.
Peskov said he was unaware of any current or potential BRICS members reconsidering their participation under US pressure.
Trump, who has often criticized BRICS, has claimed that the alliance seeks to weaken the global influence of the US dollar. However, the organization does not have a shared currency, and most trade among its members continues in their respective national currencies. BRICS leaders have repeatedly stressed that they are not attempting to undermine the dollar, arguing instead that politicizing the global currency system poses a far greater danger.
Founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, BRICS has since grown to include South Africa, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. The group now surpasses the G7 in total GDP. At its most recent summit in Kazan, Russia, BRICS introduced a new “partner country” status to accommodate growing interest from more than 30 nations seeking closer cooperation.
