Orban aide says Hungary wants to form anti-Ukraine alliance within EU

(MENAFN) Hungary is reportedly seeking to form an anti-Ukraine bloc within the European Union by coordinating with Slovakia and the Czech Republic, according to a senior adviser to Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Balazs Orban, who is not related to the Hungarian premier, suggested that Budapest, Bratislava, and Prague align their positions ahead of EU summits, potentially through trilateral pre-meeting discussions. His comments follow the recent victory of the right-wing ANO party in Czech elections, led by Andrej Babis, who echoed the stances of Orban and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. All three leaders have resisted sending military aid to Kiev, favoring peaceful resolution of the conflict and closer economic ties with Russia.

When asked about the likelihood of a “Ukraine-skeptic” bloc in the European Council, the adviser said, “I think it will come – and be more and more visible.” He compared the potential alliance to the Visegrad 4 group’s coordination during the migration crisis, when Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland successfully resisted mandatory asylum quotas.

While a formal pact between the three nations “remains some way off,” such a coalition could significantly hinder EU efforts to provide financial and military support to Ukraine, according to analysts. Brussels has stepped up pressure on hesitant member states over the European Commission’s proposal to use frozen Russian assets to fund Kiev. EU diplomats warn that delaying consensus could complicate decision-making if Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic push forward with their plan.

Moscow has responded by labeling any confiscation of Russian funds as “theft” and threatened potential retaliation, including nationalizing Western-owned property within Russia.

Meanwhile, Czech President Petr Pavel has asked Babis to lead talks on forming a new government. The ANO leader previously announced that Prague would halt direct military aid to Ukraine and expressed unwillingness to join the EU.
