US, S. Korea ink deal to boost collaboration in AI
Known as the Technology Prosperity Deal, the pact was concluded ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in the southeastern South Korean city of Gyeongju, according to reports.
The signing came shortly before US President Donald Trump began his two-day visit to South Korea, during which he held talks with President Lee Jae Myung.
"AI promises a new golden age of innovation by empowering individuals and supercharging progress across sectors like healthcare, advanced manufacturing, and education," the two countries said in a joint statement.
The agreement outlines plans for Washington and Seoul to cooperate on “developing pro-innovation AI policy frameworks” and “promoting the export of trusted AI technology stacks.”
Ha Jung-woo, a senior advisor on AI policy and future planning to President Lee, emphasized the deal’s guiding principles, saying: “We have decided to put priority on direction over speed, trust over control, and cooperation over competition.”
Michael Kratsios, head of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, also welcomed the accord, noting that it “reflects Washington's respect for South Korea as a technology partner of the US.”
South Korea is currently preparing for a two-day APEC high-level meeting that will bring together representatives from 21 member economies later this week.
