Xi thanks Trump for his efforts in promoting peace
“You care a lot about world peace, and you're very enthusiastic about settling various regional hotspot issues. I appreciate your great contribution to the recent conclusion of the Gaza ceasefire agreement,” Xi told Trump. He also highlighted Trump’s involvement in a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, signed Sunday following deadly border clashes in July.
The meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies in six years; they last met at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, in June 2019.
Xi emphasized the global challenges facing both nations, stating, “China and the US can jointly shoulder our responsibility as major countries and work together to accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of our two countries and the whole world.” He noted that differences in national circumstances sometimes lead to disagreements but framed such friction as a normal aspect of relations between leading economies.
The Chinese president also acknowledged progress made by trade teams from both countries, which met several times, including over the weekend in Malaysia, describing their work as creating a “solid foundation, sound atmosphere” for ongoing talks.
“In the face of winds, waves and challenges, you and I at the helm of China-US relations should stay the right course and ensure the steady sailing forward of the giant ship of China-US relations,” Xi stressed, reiterating the potential for both nations to achieve meaningful outcomes together.
