Spain Greenlights Hurjet-Based Fighter Pilot Training Initiative

(MENAFN) Spain has approved a major new fighter pilot training initiative, centered on a customized version of the Turkish-made supersonic Hurjet, according to official statements and press reports.

Following its Tuesday session, Spain’s Cabinet confirmed that the €3.12 billion ($3.62 billion) contract for the integrated training system will extend through 2035 with no option for extension.

The aircraft at the heart of the program will be based on Turkish Aerospace Industries’ (TAI) Hurjet, a two-seat, supersonic advanced trainer, Actualidad Aeroespacial reported. Production will occur at TAI facilities in Türkiye, with adaptation in Spain to incorporate domestic high-performance systems and the Integrated Training System – Combat (ITS-C) platform.

Airbus Defence and Space Spain will coordinate national industry participation. Actualidad Aeroespacial reported: "The agreement will leverage Airbus's expertise in design, manufacturing, systems integration, in-service support, and training, along with Turkish Aerospace's innovative design of the Hurjet, a supersonic, single-engine, two-seat training aircraft with advanced capabilities."

An official statement added that the contract “will allow the Air Force and Space to meet the requirements necessary for updating, expanding and renewing the capabilities in the instruction of pilots specializing in Fighter and Attack aircraft, aimed at ensuring adequate preparation for operations in these new and complex security scenarios.”

The ITS-C system is set to replace the aging AE.09 (F-5) platform, offering a fully integrated training environment that combines aircraft, simulators, and digital tools. The program aims to boost training efficiency and realism in line with NATO and international standards.

Initial deliveries are slated for 2028, with pilot instruction at Talavera la Real Air Base expected to start between 2029 and 2030. Fully adapted Hurjets featuring Spanish systems are anticipated from 2031, according to Defensa.com. While the Cabinet statement did not disclose the number of aircraft, prior agreements suggest as many as 45 units could be involved.

A memorandum of understanding signed in May between Airbus and TAI seeks to reinforce defense cooperation, support Spanish industrial participation, and explore export opportunities. The initiative also encompasses simulation technologies, AI-assisted tools, and performance evaluation systems to advance pilot training across all stages.
