WHO Highlights Global Spread of Mpox

(MENAFN) The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a warning that all recognized strains of the mpox virus continue to circulate, prompting concerns about ongoing community transmission if outbreaks are not quickly controlled.

In addition, a newly identified clade, called clade Ib, has now extended beyond the African continent.

According to the latest situation update from the WHO, 42 nations reported a combined total of 3,135 confirmed mpox infections and 12 fatalities in September 2025, reflecting a case fatality ratio (CFR) of 0.4%.

The majority of these cases—over 80%—were documented within the African Region.

The report noted that seventeen African countries have experienced persistent transmission over the last six weeks, totaling 2,862 confirmed cases and 17 deaths (CFR 0.6%).

Among these, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Liberia, Kenya, and Ghana recorded the highest figures, with Kenya and Liberia showing increasing trends, while the Congo reported a decrease.

"Four regions (African Region, Eastern Mediterranean Region, Region of the Americas, and the Western Pacific) observed a declining trend in confirmed cases reported per month, while the European and South-East Asian regions observed an increase in cases in September 2025," the report stated.

Since the previous edition of this report, Malaysia, Namibia, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain have confirmed detection of clade Ib monkeypox virus (MPXV) "for the first time."
