Japan PM Takaichi Says Parliament Dissolution Not on Table

(MENAFN) Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, stated she has no immediate plans to dissolve parliament following her return from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, according to a public broadcaster.

At a news conference in South Korea, Takaichi emphasized that her main focus is fulfilling commitments to the Japanese public, particularly key economic initiatives.

"I don't have time to consider that at the moment," she told reporters when asked whether she plans to dissolve the Lower House after returning home.

Takaichi assumed office last month as Japan’s first female prime minister, taking over from Shigeru Ishiba, who stepped down after facing mounting criticism within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party following consecutive election losses.

Earlier this week, she hosted US President Donald Trump in Japan and traveled to Malaysia to attend an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.

On Thursday, Takaichi arrived in South Korea for the APEC summit — her first trip to the country as prime minister — where she met with Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on the sidelines of the event.
