Al-Sudani Secures Commanding Lead in Iraq’s Election

(MENAFN) Iraq's electoral authority has certified the outcome of the November 11 parliamentary vote, revealing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani's political alliance secured a commanding lead in the fragmented legislature.

The Independent High Electoral Commission unveiled comprehensive results during a Monday press briefing broadcast nationwide, showing minimal deviations from initial figures released previously.

Official tallies confirm al-Sudani's Reconstruction and Development Coalition captured 46 seats within the 329-member Council of Representatives, Iraq's parliament. Former Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's State of Law Coalition claimed second place with 29 seats, while ex-Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi's Taqaddum (Progress) Alliance secured 27 seats.

The electoral performance strengthens al-Sudani's leverage heading into upcoming coalition-building talks. Without any faction achieving an absolute majority, assembling a governing alliance remains the crucial next phase in Iraq's democratic machinery.

In parallel proceedings Monday, the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court determined the current government must transition to caretaker status now that the departing parliament's tenure has concluded.

Under caretaker protocols, the government faces strict operational constraints—restricted to routine administrative functions while barred from executing long-range commitments including treaty ratifications, loan agreements, or high-level personnel appointments. The nation's president will maintain their position until the newly elected parliament convenes.

The final certification sets the stage for what analysts anticipate will be complex negotiations among Iraq's diverse political factions to forge a stable governing majority.
