Trump Declares NATO Talks on Greenland Underway
"NATO has been dealing with us on Greenland. We need Greenland for national security very badly," Trump told reporters.
"If we don't have it, we have a big hole in national security — especially when it comes to what we're doing in terms of the Golden Dome and all of the other things."
The President declined to elaborate on the specific military or security programs he mentioned, though he emphasized that Washington is actively coordinating with the transatlantic alliance on the issue.
"We're talking to NATO," he said.
Earlier the same day, Trump floated the possibility of deploying tariffs as economic pressure against nations that resist American objectives regarding Greenland.
"I may do that for Greenland, too," Trump said, referencing a previous confrontation with French President Emmanuel Macron where he threatened a comprehensive 25% tariff to force pharmaceutical price increases in France.
"I may put a tariff on countries if they don't go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security," he stated during a White House event.
Just last week, Trump indicated the United States must "acquire" Greenland to block Russia or China from securing influence over the autonomous Danish territory.
Both Denmark and Greenland have categorically dismissed any notion of selling the territory, firmly restating Danish sovereignty over the island.
Senior Danish officials convened with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House Wednesday to address the controversy.
After the meeting concluded, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen characterized the exchange to reporters as "frank and constructive" while acknowledging that "fundamental disagreements" persist.
