Trump says Greenland crucial to US security, confirms NATO talks

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump said on Friday that Greenland is critical to US national security and confirmed that discussions with NATO are underway regarding the territory, according to his statements to reporters.

“NATO has been dealing with us on Greenland. We need Greenland for national security very badly,” Trump said, emphasizing the strategic role of the island. “If we don't have it, we have a big hole in national security — especially when it comes to what we're doing in terms of the Golden Dome and all of the other things.”

While Trump did not provide specific details about the military or security initiatives he referenced, he stressed that the United States is actively engaging NATO on the matter, stating simply, “We're talking to NATO.”

Trump also suggested that tariffs could be used as leverage against countries that oppose US interests regarding Greenland. “I may do that for Greenland, too,” he said, recalling a previous interaction with French President Emmanuel Macron, when he used the threat of a 25% tariff to negotiate higher drug prices. “I may put a tariff on countries if they don't go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security.”

Last week, Trump proposed that the US must “acquire” Greenland to prevent Russia or China from gaining influence over the autonomous Danish territory, a suggestion rejected by both Denmark and Greenland, which reaffirmed Danish sovereignty.

Officials from Denmark recently met with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the White House to discuss the issue further.
