US Senator Slams Trump Administration Over Lack of Iran War Strategy
"The ‘no quarter’ comment by the SecDef and this ‘just for fun’ remark by the President tells me there was never a clear strategy for this war," Kelly said on social media.
The remarks followed Hegseth’s recent comments to reporters, in which he declared, "We will keep pushing, keep advancing. No quarter, no mercy for our enemies." Legal experts have noted that Hegseth’s pledge of “no quarter” may violate international humanitarian law, as declaring that no mercy will be given can be considered a potential war crime, comparable to attacking wounded combatants or those attempting to surrender.
Tensions in the Middle East have intensified since joint US-Israel attacks on Iran began on Feb. 28, resulting in over 1,300 deaths, including that of then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Thirteen US service members have been killed, and roughly 200 others injured since the operation started.
Kelly criticized the administration for appearing to improvise objectives as the conflict progresses, saying, "And at this point, three weeks in, they are just making up objectives as they stumble along all while our troops are put at risk and Americans are paying for it at the pump."
In a separate post, Kelly noted that he had sent a letter to Hegseth requesting clarification on what he specifically meant by the phrase “no quarter.”
