Rubio Expects Updates on Iran Negotiations Over Strait of Hormuz
Speaking to reporters before a meeting at the State Department with Winston Peters, Rubio indicated that developments might emerge within hours. “Hope we have more news later today on that,” he said when asked about the possibility of Iran entering peace talks.
He also criticized Iran’s actions in the vital shipping route, stating: “The whole world’s been impacted unfortunately because Iran is violating every law known by striking commercial vessels in the Straits of Hormuz, and it’s a big problem for the world.”
According to reports, the comments followed a warning issued by US President Donald Trump, who set a deadline for Iran to restore access through the waterway and agree to negotiations or face potential strikes targeting its energy sector.
Tensions in the region have intensified since late February, after joint military operations by the United States and Israel targeted Iran, resulting in significant casualties, including the reported death of Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran has carried out drone and missile attacks aimed at Israel as well as neighboring countries such as Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf states hosting US forces, while also limiting maritime traffic through the Strait.
Separately, a State Department summary noted that Rubio and Peters discussed a range of issues, including bilateral relations, the ongoing conflict involving Iran, supply chains for critical minerals, and security concerns in the Pacific Islands, according to reports.
