Starmer Faces Commons Vote Over Mandelson Vetting Investigation

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is preparing to face a House of Commons vote that could trigger a formal parliamentary investigation into how the vetting process was handled in the appointment of Lord Mandelson, amid renewed political pressure on his government.

According to reports, Mandelson was named ambassador to the United States in December 2024, but was removed from the post in September 2025 after Downing Street said newly surfaced information raised concerns about the extent of his association with convicted US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle has confirmed that a debate will take place on Tuesday after receiving requests from a number of MPs, including Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch.

Following the debate, MPs are expected to decide whether to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee for further scrutiny, as reported by a media outlet.

Starmer has rejected accusations that he misled Parliament regarding the appointment process, including claims about whether proper procedures were followed and whether senior officials at the Foreign Office were free from political pressure.

Downing Street dismissed the push for an inquiry as politically motivated. A spokesperson described it as “a desperate political stunt by the Conservative Party the week before the May elections… Their claims have no substance.”

However, Badenoch has accused the prime minister of repeatedly misleading Parliament and urged Labour MPs to reflect carefully on their position.

She said Starmer had misled MPs “multiple times” and called on members of his party to “look into their consciences.”
